Sadhana and Churidars

Actress Sadhana has the well merited image of being  a glamour doll of  the 1960s; but she was a glamorous woman who had phenomenal acting talents too. She had the gumption to try out new styles and make the nation go crazy about them.

While the rest of the actresses could only experiment with the design of their sarees and cut of the saree blouses, she took two regular outfits worn with other combinations and brought it a notch higher to the excitement of rapt young girls and women.

Sadhana with creative inputs from her costume designer, Bhanu Athaiya who later was an Oscar Winner for Costumes for a Hollywood film, attempted to match the tight churidar with a regular kurti for the Muslim social movie Mere Mehboob. But it was for the super hit Yash Chopra directed film Waqt, that she along with Bhanu Athaiya and Yash Chopra’s approval, adopted the fusion style of matching tight sleeveless kurti with a churidar . And this style was immediately picked up by the girls and is popular enough to be still worn today.

It is also interesting to see that as minis and tight dresses were becoming popular in the West, a still conservative India took the basic premise of the West and transformed it to suit Indian sensibilities of the 1960s!
